Brighton MET maths students inspire at recent MEI Maths Challenge
Maths students from Brighton MET College recently took part in the South Regional Finals of the Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI) FE Maths Challenge.
The challenge is a competition for post-16 students who are improving their GCSE Maths grade or working towards gaining a Functional Skills maths qualification.
There were three categories at the event for students to take part in:
- The Funkies – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade one or who are studying Functional Skills entry.
- Ein2steins – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade two or who are studying Functional Skills level one.
- Go Forth – for students whose highest GCSE grade is a grade three or who are studying Functional Skills level two.
The event was hosted by Brighton MET college in partnership with University of Sussex, and it marked the end of the South Regional Finals.
The Chichester College Group was well represented at the event, with students from Crawley College and Chichester College also in attendance.
There were students from Queen Mary College (Basingstoke), City of Portsmouth College, NESCOT, the Isle of Wight College, and Havant and South Downs College who also took part event.
Martin Newton, Maths Education Support Specialist at MEI, said:
“It was absolutely awesome, the students loved it. As always with these regional finals, students have come through from the first round in the classroom to college finals, and then these regional finals.
“The idea behind this challenge is to engage students further with their maths, it helps build up their confidence, and build towards their maths exams. Most importantly, it gives them a fun and enjoyable experience, leaving them with positive memories of doing maths.
“We’ve had the addition this year of being sponsored by AQA, who is also a charity as well as an awarding body, so that’s been very helpful as well to us.”
